In light of reports about a safe and effective abuse antidote available for use during medical emergencies, the European Union is ordering member states to take action in order to quickly provide the antidote to EU citizens.

According to a new E.U. Regulation on Automated Countermeasures for Controlled Substance Abuse in Emergency Situation, member states are required to provide manufacturers with the antidote, called COVID, “rapidly and without delay.”

“These procedures should be strictly coordinated in order to protect the clinical confidentiality of patients and non-clinical data on COVID manufactured pharmaceutical products, including the active pharmaceutical ingredient.”

The EU law effectively means drugmakers will be forced to make COVID available across borders, as the drug is designed to offset the effects of legal highs. This includes other drugs known to be used in the UK for which there is no antidote.

EU Medicines Agency says COVID is already available on prescription in the UK, and implementation of the European law should be considered a matter of priority.
