Toronto police arrested and charged two women Thursday, following the death of a three-year-old boy, who died of ingesting what may have been an illicit drug.
The Ottawa Citizen reports that this isn’t the first time a child has died of ingesting drugs. Last summer, a six-year-old boy named Traeger Walker died after eating an illegal substance found in his school cafeteria.
Police called the arrests “a significant step forward in a complex investigation into the death of the young boy,” according to CTV News. Police were able to track down the mother and stepmother of the three-year-old who had been watching the child, after a Canadian hotline received tips about possible drug activity. The mother and stepmother have been charged with endangering the life of a child.
The death of the child is currently being investigated as a homicide. “The investigation is actively going on,” said homicide detective Sgt. Derek Tomczak to the CBC News. “The young girl who found the little boy, we are speaking to her, and we are interviewing members of his family to also bring everyone back for questioning.”
According to the report, police are seeking to add the child’s mother and stepmother to the list of those charged with homicide.
