“One doesn’t want to die before they get to meet their kids.”
So began Richard Thompson’s first viral Facebook post. After learning that his beloved mother had died after suffering what was likely a deadly heart attack in 2017, he took a step back. Instead of continuing with his mother’s funeral, and the draining task of burying her, Thompson decided to write a note of encouragement — and a plea for others to be more aware.
“We’ve all dealt with challenges,” he wrote. “To face them with fortitude, with passion and with purpose and for that matter, to face them with tenacity and without fear.”
But he was especially critical of those who don’t realize when the stress of their job could increase their risk of having a heart attack. “If you thought I was upset and in anguish, just wait for your opportunity to find out how you’re really harming your fellow man and woman. I’m not afraid, but I am suspicious.”

About the post: The author of the post, Richard Thompson, is a Lubbock County deputy with the Maxwell Sheriff’s Office. His mother, Charis Thompson, passed away at the age of 72 after suffering a fatal heart attack.
Even so, the incredibly powerful post spread like wildfire. Richard Thompson was featured on CNN and with Good Morning America. Supporters from around the country expressed their condolences.
“I really wouldn’t want you or anyone around you go through the grief I had when my parents died,” one person wrote. “I still remember the feeling in my stomach when I heard about your mom’s death. Nothing makes sense when you know the love of your life is not with you anymore. She said she would do everything she could to not let that happen. You know she did that and was on her own when that ‘rain began to fall’!”
“Everyone wants to help, but sometimes the hardest part is the realization that some stuff needs to be done,” Thompson wrote.
It now appears Thompson is able to sleep a little better.
