Ford Motor Company and Mellanox Technologies today announced a U.S.-based partnership that will help ensure the smooth flow of U.S.-made chips in the rapidly-evolving automotive industry. Through this agreement, Mellanox has been selected as a solution provider to accelerate automotive-grade interconnect-based system design in the upcoming vehicle electrification and infotainment systems. The engagement will start with engineering simulations and systems demonstrations and will rapidly become a dedicated business unit. The collaboration will support the U.S. automotive industry in its next major wave of vehicle electrification by helping manufacturers to quickly meet stringent and complex new energy requirements.
In the 2017 Ford F-150, 70 percent of the electronic drivetrain components (including onboard computers) were comprised of semiconductors manufactured in Michigan’s 787.3 million-square-foot assembly plant. Ford currently serves as one of the largest semiconductor suppliers in the U.S. in terms of both units (47.8 million by 2017) and dollars ($1.2 billion in 2017).
